Petrified Termite Mound Found On Mars?

A possible petrified termite mound has been found by the mars curiosity rover, and as you can see in the raw image above, a large towering structure which resembles a termite mound can easily be seen.

Termite mounds can have a diameter of around 30 meters, but these can vary depending on the climate and the colony of critters that inhabit them.

Termite mounds are prevalent in Africa, Australia, and South America, and usually require a very hot and dry climate, a climate just like mars.

Inside the mound is an extensive system of tunnels, that serve as a ventilation system for the underground nest, this intricate system also keeps the inside of the mound moist.

In the Miombo woodland area of central Africa, scientists  found an abandoned termite mound that was more than 2200 years old.

That makes the mound the oldest termite structure ever dated, notwithstanding those that have become preserved as fossils.

Another mound studied is at least 750 years old, confirming the ancient mound wasn’t an anomaly, the discovery suggests that termites used the same structures for millennia.

The remarkable termite mound on mars is long dead, but it could give further evidence that mars did indeed have a life sustaining atmosphere.

It would also prove that mars was very similar to earth in its distant past, hosting a variety of perennial plant life and exotic insects.
